I am 34 years old, have an amateur level telescope and watch the starts very regularly. I have never witnessed an event like this in my lifetime. I watch meteor showers regularly enough to know this was within our atmosphere.

Like a Roman candle firework but igniting downward in the atmosphere towards the Earth. Sudden burst of flame and then flame/light trail for around 1 second, then spontaneous fizzle out.
